After an intensive job hunt, I got a job offer at Yahoo7.com about 6 weeks after my arrival in Sydney.
The position is finance product manager – finance editor and I was so excited to be working for such an international, on the edge company.
The only thing I had to be careful of was changing my pronouniation of my new Job place. Ask any South African to pronounce the word “yahoo” and they’ll say “ye-hoo” with the “ye” being like the pronunciation of “year”. But in Australia and everywhere else in the world – “yahoo” is said like “yah-hoo” – the first sylable being said like the Afrikaans word for yes – “ja”. So I rapidly needed to change this!
My offices are incredible – they are situated in Miller’s Point right at the top of the rocks. It’s pretty much a few steps away from the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The offices are in a re-done warehouse on the pier right on the water.
We also rub elbows with celebrities with Nicole Kidman’s pad and boat being right opposite our offices. I often book a meeting room with a direct view of her apartment – you never know when she might pop by.
Best of all, I take a ferry into work from Rose Bay. It’s a 10 minute boat trip to Circular Quay and then a ten minute walk to work. What a pleasure!
