My Sydney Apartment

February 16, 2007

I officially moved into my Sydney apartment in Rose Bay in early 2007. This apartment was a culmination of a bit of a stressful apartment hunt

But looking around it now, I am so very glad that I decided to rent this place.

Since I came from Cape Town with pretty much just the clothes off my back (OK, I had a suitcase full of clothes), I need to start from scratch. I decided that I no longer wanted hand-me-down furniture – this had to be stuff that was “me”.

And so the shopping began. I became a daily local at Bondi Junction Westfield (a huge mall) , buying all my cutlery and crockery from David Jones (Sydney has the most awesome New Year sales – I went a little crazy).

I also dragged my angelic cousins – Lara and Ruth – to Ikea where we shopped till we literally dropped, finding my dining room table (which expands from 2 to 8 settings), a coffee table, bedside tables, chairs etc. I came back vowing never to return to Ikea again. If you’ve never been – it’s this labyrinth of household stuff and once you enter, you can’t leave until you’ve reached the end of the shop…seriously. And then once you’ve decided what you want, you need to go down to the warehouse and collect it yourself. All the funiture is packed in flat boxes. What a lug!!!

Freedom also did well out of me with the funky “o” chair – it was a hole in the middle of it. It’s worth a trip to Sydney just to sit in my chair – I promise :). Then there’s also some fab outside furniture for my balcony (and yes, I do have a city view if I stand on my tippy toes and crane my head around the trees giraffe style).

I bought my chocolate brown suede coach from a place in Moore Park Supacentre (which is packed with Furniture shops and household department stores).

I rounded up my big purchases from Bing Lee – a well known electronic store – with a big TV, great fridge, kettle, toaster, vacuum cleaner etc etc.

And then I had to unpack it all……

Apartment Hunting in Sydney

December 18, 2006

Apartment “Hunting” with hunting being the operative word! Finding a flat in Sydney is like stalking a lion in the wild – you have to be stealthy and cunning and oh so very patient.

Back in South Africa, you would more than likely phone up an estate agent, reel off your requirements and they would leap up from their paperwork to escort you through the suburbs until you find the place of your dreams. It’s all so very easy.

In Sydney, it’s way more cut-throat. What you need to do is register with an online real estate database (I reckon is the best), do a search on the areas you are interested and isolate the apartments that “look” nice” (I put look in inverted comma’s because as I found out later, the pics can be VERY deceiving – based on the photo’s, I was ready to put my deposit down immediately, until I saw the real thing – ugh!!!).

Anyway, once you have a list of apartments for rent, you then join the throngs of other flat hunters on the Saturday Runround. Each apartment is open for view for 15 minutes – I am not joking – 15 minutes!!!! So I would end up with a list of let’s say 6 apartments in different suburbs and would have to draw up a precise spreadsheet listing my route. And then rush from one flat to the other. It felt as if I was on a solo Amazing Race.

Then once you arrive at the apartment on view, you’ll be joined by at least 20 other people all looking eachother up and down, trying to measure up their enthusiasm. And then it’s a race to grab an application form, rush to the estate agency and put down a deposit – pshew, exhausting!

Well, thank goodness, out of the 20 flats that I saw (ranging from disgusting, horrific to slightly less disasterly), I managed to find an apartment in Rose Bay in the Eastern Suburbs, which suited my needs. It’s a one bedroom place with a lovely kitchen and balcony (for all those barby/braai days). It may be a little small for me but it’s only a 6 month lease so I can move on if I want.

The big move is on Friday, so wish me luck!!!!
